Dunn & Co., Inc.’s home is Macgregor Mills, a 300,000 square foot facility, in Clinton, MA nestled in the Nashua River Valley. The 1910 converted cotton mill was once part of Lancaster Mills cotton weaving operations owned by the Bigelow family. Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2010, Macgregor Mills is proud of it’s American manufacturing history.
Dunn & Co., Inc., was established in 1976 by Dave Dunn as a way to provide services
to the book manufacturing industry. Most book publishers, at the time, didn’t have
a cost effective way to fix problems with books like pages put in upside down, misprints
or pages left out. Dave realized the he could help these publishers with highly skilled
‘hand work’ like canceling and tipping -
Dave Dunn also realized that most book manufacturing facilities would rather not package books, so he began offering shrink wrap and other packaging solutions. One of his most popular solutions to a problem was providing thumb tab indexing to book manufacturers who produced encyclopedias and other books requiring tabs. He worked with an engineer to produce a thumb indexing ‘gun’. Through the use of this new tool, hand thumb tab indexing became a true affordable option for book manufacturers.
In 1980, Dave Dunn became aware of another problem that hunted book publishers. After
a hard cover book has been printed, if the inventory doesn’t sell, the only option
for book manufacturers was to ‘remainder’ the book. This would only bring the publisher
a dollar or two, the most. This loss was becoming overwhelming to many publishers.
